Phi Phi Islands

Over View

If you are traveling to Phuket you might also want to consider a side trip for a few days to the island of Koh Phi Phi which is just 46 kilometers, or a short 90-minute boat ride, from the largest Thai island of Phuket.

The Phi Phi archipelago is made up of 6 small islands and these islands have some of the most stunning beaches you ever want to visit. The combination of these sugary white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and a chilled-out feel have made Koh Phi Phi a must-visit for beach lovers around the world.

Naturally with all these available beaches there may be some uestion about which ones you have to visit, which are the best of the best. Here are 4 of the most popular Phi Phi beaches that I feel everyone should come to see.

Long Tong Beach – This beach is in northern Phi Phi and is accessible only by longtail boat. This factor makes the beach secluded and a perfect choice if you are looking for quiet and solitude. In addition, the beach is right across from the smaller islands of Koh Yung and Koh Phai and these two islands provide some outstanding snorkeling for those who want to get underwater and see the fantastic marine life.

Loh Dalum – This beach is opposite Tonsai Bay and can be reached by walking from Tonsai. It is a stunning crescent shaped beach with the bay in front the stuff that travel guide books are made of. Because it is close to Tonsai there are still some restaurants, shops and bars here, but the pace is much slower than the main area of Tonsai. It’s a great beach to just chill out on and is perfect for those making a day trip from Phuket or Krabi.

Long Beach – Long beach has some of the softest sand of all the Phi Phi beaches. Snorkeling is also possible from the beach and there are some stunning corals and fishes to be seen just meters from the beach. If you plan on coming to Long Beach avoid the low season (May-October) because the water can be rough making swimming difficult.

Maya Bay – Possibly the most famous beach in all of Thailand thanks to the fact that it was the setting for the movie The Beach in 1999. It is uite stunning, with high limestone cliffs on three sides of the bay and several small beaches in this sheltered area. The entire bay is a large coral reef and the main beach is perfectly white sand fringed by palm trees. Many day trips come to Maya Bay and it’s a great place to get some photos, go snorkeling or just have a picnic lunch and relax.

Best things to do in Phi Phi Islands

Discover the best things to do and to see in Phi Phi Islands; known in Thailand as Koh Phi Phi, they are stunningly beautiful and surely rank as one of the best attractions in southern Thailand. Located 43km west from Krabi coast, this small archipelago consists of six islands: Koh Phi Phi Don, Koh Phi Phi Leh, Koh Bida Nok, Koh Bida Nai, Koh Phai (Bamboo Island), and Koh Young (Mosquito Island); the only inhabited island – and the largest – of the group is Koh Phi Phi Don.

Koh Phi Phi Leh & Maya Bay
Koh Phi Phi Leh is the second-largest island in the small Phi Phi archipelago. Uninhabited apart by a few rangers established in a small camp belonging to the Hat Nopharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park, the island hosts only one beach situated in Maya Bay that became world-famous after the release in 2000 of a blockbuster movie with Leonardo Di Caprio: The Beach.

    Phi Phi View Point
Koh Phi Phi Don has an unusual shape – like an ‘H’ – with its main village built on the horizontal bar, a 100m flat strip of sand stuck between Dalum Bay to the north and Tonsai Bay to the south. The two vertical bars of the H are mountainous and covered with jungle. Phi Phi View Point is located to the east of the flat strip of sand and overlooks the village and the two bays. It is a picture-postcard setting sure to impress friends back home!

    Bamboo Island
Bamboo Island (Koh Phai in Thai) is one of the six islands belonging to the Phi Phi archipelago in the southern Thai province of Krabi. Lying approximately five kilometres northeast off Koh Phi Phi Don, Bamboo Island is a tropical dream come true; measuring 600m wide by 700m long, the island is entirely surrounded by a strip of white sand, and its central part is covered with lush vegetation including Bamboo trees that gave its name to the island in its central part.

    Diving in Phi Phi
Diving is one of the prime activities in Phi Phi and the island counts a large number of serious and professional PADI dive centers dispensing courses – from Discover Scuba Diving to Divemaster – and day trips to the many world-class dive sites available in and around Phi Phi waters.

    Shark Watching Tours
Amongst all the great snorkeling tours available from Koh Phi Phi Don, the Shark watching tours have gained popularity for obvious reasons; since the release in 1975 of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, sharks have stimulated human imagination – not necessarily in the right way – and aroused curiosity. The waters around Phi Phi Islands host a good number of inoffensive black-tip and leopard sharks.

    Rock climbing
Krabi Province is the Mecca of rock climbing in southern Thailand due to the tall limestone cliffs that are real natural landmarks of the province. Krabi offers world-class sites such as Tonsai Beach and Diamond Cave in Railay, and all along its coast. Phi Phi Don Island may be lying 42km off Krabi coast, but it has the same topography: Tonsai Tower, located at the western end of Tonsai Bay, is the rock climbers’ paradise in Phi Phi; this 200m tall limestone tower hosts 48 different bolted routes featuring all levels of difficulty from beginner to experienced climber.

Tropical bay from ‘The Beach’ to close until 2021. A Thai bay that was made famous by its appearance in the film The Beach is to remain closed until 2021. What people are saying about Phi Phi Islands

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Wish I’d known about the 20 baht landing fee at Phi Phi
Efficient service from Phuket to Phi Phi. I had changed my pick up location & had received a confirmation that the pick-up location was changed but they went to the original hotel.

I phoned the number on the voucher 1 minute after the latest pick up time & they sent a minibus straight away; however the bus was very full, the air conditioning wasn’t great & the bus journey took what felt like ages because of the heat & the traffic. Also, I had used up all my small denomination baht in Phuket & was unaware of the 20 baht landing fee in Phi Phi, so it would have been useful to know about this in advance.

Ferry Transfer Between Phuket and Koh Phi Phi reviewed by Lorraine

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐Brilliant hospitality, lunch and refreshments.
Booked online and didn’t realise we were given VIP seating with air conditioning which was great as it meant we didn’t have to smell the fumes from the boat,

snorkeling equipment was provided and the guide was friendly and well understood, make sure you bring your own towels. The lunch provided could’ve been a bit more generous as this was shared between quite a few. Overall, a lovely experience.
